At least 13 individuals killed and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been running in total adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
